A significant uptick in accidents have occurred since the start of Construction on Medlock Bridge Rd (141) & State Bridge Rd.
The intersection is already the record-keeper for having the most accidents, about 10-14 every month in the City.
Impatient drivers, frustrated with the congestion & drivers unaware of the approaching construction zone have had accident after accident, tallying to an astonishing number.
On the southbound side of 141, from State Bridge Rd, Public Works is widening the road to add a turn lane into the Regal Cinema shopping center. Intermittent lane closure have created bottle neck congestion, sometimes as far north to Abbott's Bridge Rd and beyond.
Residents in St. Ives & Medlock Corners are unable to go South on 141 at certain times because of the gridlock.
In the past 20 days, over 37 accidents have been reported, according to the Police records. Accidents have occurred in mostly the daytime hours, from St. Ives Country Club down to Old Alabama Rd. State Bridge Rd has had its fair share of the accidents as traffic backs up waiting to pass through the intersection.
According to the Director of Public Works, Tom Black, the construction on the Southbound side will take about 40 more days to finish, without weather delays and other interruptions.
Then the Construction will move to the Northbound side of 141, to extend a left turn lane for Medlock Crossing Pkwy. This will allow commuters an easier way to go West on State Bridge Rd, and avoid the main intersection. Mr. Black stated that project should take about 20 days, without delays.
This could equate to 100 more accidents if things continue the way they are going.
Hopefully all the construction will be finished by Thanksgiving. That will be something to be Thankful for.
