    CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. —

    A loud, unusual noise heard overnight across parts of Chatham County has sparked widespread speculation on social media.

    Some residents said they were simply confused. Others said the noise was alarming, especially amid heightened global tensions, and left them wondering whether there was a threat to public safety.

    “I’ve never heard anything like it before,” Savannah resident Sarah Cuda said.

    Residents spanning Savannah, Georgetown and Berwick said the sound woke them up in the early hours of Friday morning and, in some cases, lasted as long as 20 minutes.
