Citizens in every county throughout the state of Georgia are preparing for the 2022 candidate qualification opportunity window, which is open between March 7 and 11. Per O.C.G.A. 21-2-153(c)(1)(A), nonpartisan candidates may qualify to be included in special elections that may occur at the same time as the primaries. Additionally, party-affiliated candidates may quality for primaries and special elections. Independent candidates may file a notice of candidacy and affidavits the week of March 7-11 for county, state, and federal offices that will be on the ballot in November. Nomination petitions are required in the state of Georgia for Independents and circulation is permitted 1/13/22 - 7/12/22. Contact your county Board of Elections for all the details.

As citizens, there are two main areas to monitor for opportunities within our representative system:

1 - Candidate Qualification processes handled at the County Level - typically state judges, school boards, county commissions, some staff, and some municipal.

2 - Candidate Qualification processes handled at the Georgia State Capitol - state legislature, judgeships, service commissioners, state executive branch, and federal positions.

This year, county Boards of Elections have had an extremely high workload because of the issues surrounding both re-apportionment and re-districting. New "official" maps are just only now arriving to offices for public and candidate use. Additionally, there are several new requirements from recent election legislation, including the posting of daily reports during the early voting period. Many Election Advisors are bracing for the consequences of the inability to confirm the integrity of absentee ballots, as signature verification is no longer a requirement. Some claim their hands are tied regarding observations of ballot harvesting activities, even though the drop boxes may be within their immediate purview.  Additionally, in a no-bid contract, Georgia's Secretary of State announced the outsourcing of Georgia's Voter Registration System to Salesforce.com, which has raised immense concern. Citizens are critically needed again this election cycle to engage the election processes, in roles such as election watchdogs, paid workers and poll watchers.
