Starting on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, you will need a Real ID to board an airplane in the United States.

The Real ID law has law roots in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Several of the 9/11 high-jackers acquired state drivers licenses without having to show real proof of identity. In some states it was easy to get a Drivers License. In response, U.S. Congress passed the Real ID Act.

The law’s purpose is to make sure that everyone who boarded a plane actually is who he says he is.

Do you have a Real ID? Here is how you can tell if you have a Georgia Drivers License. Look at your Drivers License. Does it have a five-point star in in the upper part of the drivers license. If it does, you probably have a Real ID.

If you don’t, then you should consult the Drivers Services website: https://dds.georgia.gov/georgia-licenseid/general-license-topics/real-id.
