Scattered, smothered, covered — and now maybe folded into a tortilla? Waffle House, the Avondale Estates-based institution that has fed Georgians through hurricanes, snowstorms, and 3 a.m. hunger pangs for nearly 70 years, is trying something decidedly different: tacos.

The chain is testing seven taco varieties at 45 locations across metro Atlanta and North Georgia for a limited time. And because this is Waffle House, there are no time restrictions — the entire taco menu is available morning, noon, or night.

The breakfast taco lineup includes four options — bacon, sausage, chicken sausage, or ham — each paired with scrambled eggs and cheese. For the lunch and dinner crowd, three more options are on offer: a patty melt taco, a chicken melt taco, and a cheesesteak melt taco, all loaded with grilled onions and cheese. All seven are available for dine-in or online ordering at participating restaurants.

“It has only been a week, but the early feedback has been positive,” Waffle House said in a statement to Fox 5 Atlanta. The company offered no timeline for whether the experiment could go permanent or expand beyond Georgia.

Atlantans have not been shy about their opinions. Social media lit up within hours of the news breaking, with reactions ranging from enthusiastic curiosity to outright betrayal. “Waffle House is sacred ground. You don’t put tacos on sacred ground,” wrote one X user. Others were more open-minded: “Honestly a cheesesteak melt taco at 2am hits different, I’m in.” The @WaterCoolerGSU account, which first flagged the story, noted the menu change has sparked the kind of Georgia debate that usually only sports rivalries produce.

The pilot locations are concentrated heavily in Gwinnett, Fulton, and Forsyth counties, with participating restaurants in Alpharetta, Buford, Duluth, Johns Creek, Lawrenceville, Norcross, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Suwanee, and Tucker among others. The full list of 45 test locations is available on the Waffle House website.

Whether tacos eventually earn a permanent spot next to the pecan waffle and the All-Star Special remains to be seen. For now, metro Atlanta is Waffle House’s test kitchen — and the jury is very much still out.
