Some Georgia nursing, physical therapy, and medical students are still required to show proof of COVID vaccination to access clinical rotations at hospitals. The mandate machine that forced shots on healthcare workers has never been turned off — and a bill that would have ended it died without ever getting a vote.

That bill was HB 1350, the Georgia Medical Freedom Act. It would have banned school and employer medical-intervention mandates — no shots as a condition of class, clinicals, or hospital employment. It was referred to the House Public and Community Health Committee, chaired by Rep. Sharon Cooper. It never received a hearing. It died there.

Meanwhile, the science on COVID vaccine safety is not closed — and a major study published in Molecular Psychiatry makes that case in numbers that should stop every mandate defender cold.

A Seoul cohort study of 2,027,353 people found that COVID vaccination was associated with significantly elevated risk of serious psychiatric conditions: depression (hazard ratio 1.68 — a 68% increased risk), anxiety, dissociative, stress-related, and somatoform disorders (HR 1.44), and sleep disorders (HR 1.93 — nearly double the risk). The study authors concluded: “Special cautions are necessary for administering additional COVID-19 vaccinations to populations vulnerable to psychiatric adverse events.” That is a peer-reviewed, population-level study. Two million people. Published in one of the most respected psychiatric journals in the world.

The case of Lindsay Clancy brings all of this home for many. Clancy was a labor and delivery nurse at Mass General Brigham through 2022 — the same year her hospital system required the COVID shot for all staff. Most exemptions were denied. Federal CMS rules mandated the shot for all healthcare workers at Medicare and Medicaid facilities. Her case is currently on trial, with questions surrounding severe psychiatric deterioration she experienced during that period.

No one can prove causation in an individual case. But the question — whether mandated COVID vaccination contributed to psychiatric harm in healthcare workers — is a legitimate scientific and legal question that has never been honestly examined. Georgia’s legislature had a chance to protect its own students and healthcare workers. Rep. Sharon Cooper’s committee made sure that chance never came to a vote.

Students in Georgia going into clinicals this fall will find the mandates unchanged. Hospitals require the shot. Schools require proof for placement. There is no opt-out.

HB 1350 is dead for this session. The question it raised is not.
