President Donald Trump announced the public release of previously classified White House files on Friday, unveiling what the administration describes as sweeping evidence of foreign interference and systemic weaknesses in U.S. elections. The documents highlight China's alleged theft of approximately 220 million American voter registration files starting in the 2020 cycle, along with widespread issues involving inaccurate voter rolls and non-citizen registrations. Officials pointed to Michigan as a key example, citing intelligence reports, state police raids on get-out-the-vote operations, and ongoing investigations into potential fraudulent registrations in counties like Macomb.

The declassified assessments assert that U.S. adversaries, including China, possess the capability to compromise election infrastructure, with China specifically assigning units to exploit stolen voter data containing names, addresses, and party affiliations. The files also reference roughly 278,000 non-citizens identified on state voter rolls nationwide via Department of Homeland Security reviews, alongside Michigan-specific cases such as a Chinese national charged with illegally voting in the 2024 election at the University of Michigan. Administration officials called the releases a step toward restoring public confidence ahead of the 2026 midterms, while urging states to strengthen verification processes.
