[Savannah, GA] - My mother followed my father around for decades as he built and ran Presbyterian churches all around the southern United States.

But, she was not from the South at heart.

Her heart remained in northern Michigan, near Mackinaw, and the Great Lakes -- where the magic of the forest, the birds, sand dunes, and the water made her happy.

She grew up in Michigan and Ohio, where there was lots of snow every winter.

She learned to deal via my southern father with the different cultures of Mississippi, Georgia, and Arkansas.

Helen was a kind person, but strong.

She took care of all the children and grandkids. And, there are many.

If anyone needed to know what was going on with anyone else in the family, she was the one to call.

She was a strong Christian.

My father used to say, "You better watch out when Nana starts praying..."

It is because of her the family remains committed to the faith.

If there was any place she loved more than Carp Lake, Michigan, it was Savannah.

She ran a frame shop here for years for the local artists. Her work still hangs in some local galleries.

She was a patriotic American.

One of her last comments was that she had to get to work to help President Trump.

I am thankful we all got to say goodbye, either in person or by video.

All the kids from around the world called in one of the last nights when she was lucid. I could tell her heart was warmed, as she smiled at each one of them.

We were trying to clear her kidneys and the toxins from her body, but the hospital staff told us it looks like she has decided to go on her own, and her body just shut down.

Many of the kids were standing around her when she passed peacefully.

So, I found it very poignant that God brought a lot of snow to Savannah for my mother's last days.

Someone told me it hasn't snowed this much here in decades.

I will truly miss her; but, I know I will see her again.

Thanks for everything, Mom.
