The Georgia record has been sounding the alarms on SB144 ever since Senator Steve Gooch introduced the bill several weeks ago.
Now comes word that one of the companies who benefits most through this legislation has been found liable and awarded $2 billion in a case tying the use of Roundup to cancer, right here in Georgia.
Bayer was ordered to pay $2.1 billion to a plaintiff who claimed the company's Roundup weed-killer caused his cancer.
Bayer stated that they will appeal the case, one of the largest legal settlements issued in a Roundup related case. Over 60,000 other cases are currently pending against Bayer.
Bayer acquired roundup as part of its purchase of Monsanto in 2018. Bayer has already paid approximately $10 billion, in settlements to other cases claiming Round up is the cause of cancer.
We've repeatedly asked why this bill has received so much push from the legislators.
Did Kemp meet with Kalidas or the Bayer team? Did they discuss SB 144? We don't know. As many will recall, Kemp avoided reporters last year as they attempted to ask with whom he was meeting and what would be discussed during his meetings at Davos.
GA Legislators seemed disinterested with public feedback when we and many others across Georgia pointed out that the bill benefited only chemical companies (e.g. Chem-China, Bayer) while leaving farmers and consumers unable to seek damages if harmed by the chemicals from these companies.
Given this latest verdict, Georgia lawmakers will be hard-pressed to explain why they rushed this bill through while leaving many issues that Georgian's asked for untouched.
Citizens should call Brian Kemp and demand that this legislation be Vetoed in order to avoid leaving Georgian's fully exposed if harmed by Round-Up or any other ag chemical.

Also interesting is that Kemp pushed SB68 tort reform at the exact same time as this glyphosate protection bill was pushed through. Now all the fault is pushed to the federal government's EPA standards, and people have a cap on damages from Roundup chemicals causing them to have cancer. When Kemp got back from the WEF Davos meeting recently, tort reform was #1 on his agenda. Now we know why...it's always about money, not people.
