GA-7 Congressman Rich McCormick recently made comments during an interview on Newsmax regarding the possible seizure of Kharg Island by American forces in the Persian Gulf. McCormick advocated 'taking' the Iranian oil production facility, saying it would be 'easily defended.' His comments were irresponsible, reckless and devoid of historical insight and frankly, reality.
He should resign from office. He is not fit to represent Americans in Congress.
McCormick is a former US Marine helicopter pilot and Navy doctor. He should know better. In fact, we both used to fly similar versions of the same Sikorsky helicopter.
The Congressman said the following to Todd Starnes during the interview:
One of the things we’ve done poorly in the past is we do this thing called limited warfare. It’s never worked for us. When we go to war college, or command and staff college, we always learned that the worst kind of way to fight any war is to do it half-assed. We were horrible in Afghanistan and Iraq until we did surge ops, and then we won. We were horrible in Vietnam until we did Thunder One– Rolling Thunder One and Rolling Thunder Two, and then we won.
As soon as we go half measures, we lose. We lose popular support. The faster we get this over, the better. We seize Kharg Island, that is technically boots on the ground. It can be done almost flawlessly. We have enough firepower. That would be very easy to defend. I know nobody wants to see that, but at the same time, we can choke them off, end this war, and get back to business so everybody’s gas prices come back down, and so they’re not funding Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. The people will be happy. But the longer we drag on, the more frustrated the people will get and the less support we will have.
Saying Kharg Island would be 'very easy to defend' is a lie, especially in today's drone warfare climate, where effective countermeasures simply haven't been fielded in scale.
The nonchalant attitude toward American lives is shocking.
Kharg Island is very near the Iranian coast. There are hundreds of miles of coastline dotted with rocky outcrops that can easily hide small boats or missile launchers. Kharg Island itself is about 20 km², a rocky limestone/coral outcrop with hills/cliffs up to ~70m, rising from deeper waters ~25–30 km offshore. In other words, there are a lot of places to hide, and an invading force would need a lot of troops to completely secure.
During the Iran-Iraq war, over one million soldiers and civilians were killed in what ended with an eventual stalemate. The Iranians never stopped fighting, even in the face of the use of chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein.
If we can't protect a half billion dollar aircraft on the ramp in Saudi Arabia, how are we going to protect a hundred thousand troops on the ground on Kharg Island and vicinity?
FPV drones, launched and controlled remotely from afar, are a thing.

In a telling bit of history, McCormick was also a cheerleader for the Ukraine war, where likely over 2 million Christians have been killed on both sides.
McCormick traveled to Ukraine as part of a bipartisan group of House members, including:
They met with Ukrainian officials, visited an exhibition on the consequences of the Russian invasion (including displays of destroyed Russian equipment), and assessed the situation on the ground and the impact of U.S. aid.
McCormick has publicly referenced the trip multiple times, stating he has "been to Kyiv," observed weapons handovers, and witnessed the effectiveness of aid. He has used the experience to advocate for continued support with oversight.
Ukraine is the most propagandized war ever in human history. Most everything in the news about the conflict is a lie. McCormick knows this, yet he pushes the war anyway, and now he wants U.S. troops on the ground in Iran where it is a certainty many will die.
The following interview on the Shawn Ryan Show of my colleage and friend former Delta Force commander Pete Blaber is the best overview of the fake nature of the war I have heard. Check out our joint podcast Ukraine SitRep on our site ArmedForces.press for more information.
