Long-time subscribers may recall my August 2024 Substack entitled, “Forsyth ‘Club Member’ Commissioners Double Size of Local Government, Do Nothing for the People.” In that article, I discussed how rather than consulting the will of the people, three commissioners, Kerry Hill, Laura Semanson and Chairman Alfred John, ignored every traditional democratic principle and principle of conservatism, and took up the final question whether to build the Freedom Parkway Admin boondoggle as a matter under their own discretion.
Unlike the 1995 commission’s decision to pass a public referendum before building the existing administration building, in the case before us the three commissioners to whom I refer made the decision to spend $140 million of taxpayer’s money all by themselves, two of five commissioners voting against the measure. That meant that the people of Forsyth County had no voice over determining whether to spend public money on what is likely the largest single infrastructure project in county history. To be clear, three individuals out 280,000 made that ill-conceived decision. And because they did, those three, including my opponent in the May primary Kerry Hill, own responsibility for that reckless decision, forever.
Reckless spending cannot coexist without reckless tax policy. That being the case, allow me to show you just how reckless your present Forsyth County Commission, under the chairmanship of Alfred John, aided by Commissioners Kerry Hill and Laura Semanson, has been in taxing and spending YOUR MONEY. Yes, it is YOUR MONEY, not theirs. Take a look at the following two tables, which illustrate how the Forsyth County Commission raised the capital for the new ill-conceived administration building, spending those sums WITHOUT asking you, the voters.
