The controversy over the Sea Island causeway continues as litigation proceeds by residents to return the roadway to county control.
In the meantime, some residents of the island are upset over large fees being charged to commercial vehicles to pass through the Sea Island gate. These fees raise the cost of home repairs and other projects as the charges are passed on to residents.
The controversy is that , according to Glynn County Ordinances, it was illegal to abandon the roads and causeway that were still being used daily by citizens, say some residents.
Sea Island appears to be using a gate not only to prevent the public from using these roads but also to charge high rates to those who from 1924 until 2004 freely accessed these roads and the beach.
The initial claim by the Sea Island corporation and county officials that agreed to abandon the roads was the change was accomplished to provide security to wealthy island residents. (see article below) However, over the years, and more so in the last decade, Venezuelan and other immigrants were brought in to provide labor, diluting the security claim.
The criminal and violent Tren de Aragua gang problem from Venezuela has been highly publicized.
