U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) officers reportedly raided the the Hyundai plant site in Bryan County this morning.
The Hyundai facility in Rome, GA was raided earlier in the year with similar results.
SMN has reached out to officials at Hyundai Motor Group USA, HMGMA, and LG Solutions (which oversees construction at the HL-GA Battery Company joint venture between Hyundai and LG) for comment on the raid. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's office has not responded to questions, wrote SMN.
Senior Public Relations Specialist for HL-GA Battery Company Mary Beth Kennedy sent a formal statement around 3 p.m. stating, "HL-GA Battery Company is cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities regarding activity at our construction site. To assist their work, we have paused construction. We do not have further details at this time."
ICE officials were on the HMGMA megasite today serving a criminal warrant at the battery plant, which is still undergoing construction.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Information Director for Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Capt. Crystal Zion confirmed around 2 p.m. that the department “assisted HSI with the service of a criminal search warrant in an operation at the Hyundai Metaplant, battery plant construction site in Bryan County.” Zion shared no further information and directed media inquiries to the office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
