Three months after a horrific acid attack in Savannah's historic Forsyth Park, new details have emerged about the substance used against victim Ashley Wasielewski, as confirmed by Savannah Police Department officials.

On December 10, 2025, 46-year-old Wasielewski was on a routine evening walk in the park when an unknown assailant approached and doused her with a corrosive chemical. The attack caused devastating fourth- and third-degree burns over more than half her body, melting her clothing, keys, jacket feathers, and even adhering burned material to her skin. She required immediate emergency care, multiple surgeries including skin grafts, and extended treatment at the Augusta Burn Center. Medical costs are projected in the hundreds of thousands to seven-figure range.

Savannah police, in an email to WJCL 22 News on Wednesday, stated that testing by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) identified a sulfuric acid compound as the substance used. Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive industrial chemical commonly found in car batteries, fertilizers, and cleaning agents. It is produced in large-scale facilities via the contact process and not typically homemade. When mixed with water, it generates intense heat and can cause severe skin, eye, and internal organ damage even in small amounts.

Despite a combined reward of $121,000 from the FBI and local businesses, no suspects have been publicly identified. Police report having "extensive digital evidence" from the area, including responses to public requests for Ring doorbell and surveillance videos near the park. The investigation remains active and ongoing, with authorities promising updates as developments occur.

In an exclusive statement to WJCL 22 News, Wasielewski's family emphasized their primary focus: "Three months have now passed since the violent attack on Ashley, and our family continues to focus on what matters most—her healing and recovery." They expressed gratitude for law enforcement efforts, acknowledging the complexity of such cases, while expressing hope for "continued progress, transparency, and ultimately accountability for the person responsible."

The family also addressed speculation, stating in a follow-up email: "Any speculation by city officials or others regarding this case being 'personal' is unfounded and irresponsible."

The random nature of the attack has heightened community concerns, with no motive or suspect identified to date. Police continue to encourage tips via the FBI's digital line at fbi.gov/forsythparkattack.
