Savannah, Ga. — A Lyft driver and his 19-year-old passenger were killed late Thursday night when a vehicle fleeing Chatham County sheriff’s deputies ran a red light and slammed into their car at a Savannah intersection.

Savannah residents are enraged at District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones for not dealing with the out of control crime in the city.

Habibullah Azizi, an Afghan immigrant in his mid-30s, was driving the Nissan Juke when the crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on April 23. Both Azizi and his passenger, Trejon Anthony, 19, of Chicago (also reported as Savannah in some records), were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to authorities, deputies were pursuing a Chevrolet Trailblazer when the driver disregarded a traffic signal and struck the Lyft vehicle. Debris from the impact scattered across the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Capital Street.

Quadramel Williams, 37, the driver of the fleeing SUV, faces multiple charges, including:

    • Two counts of murder
    • Two counts of first-degree homicide by vehicle
    • DUI
    • Fleeing or attempting to elude police
    • Reckless driving
    • Driving on a suspended or revoked license
    • And additional traffic and drug/weapon-related offenses. wrdw.com

A passenger in the Trailblazer, James Ramon Brannen, 55, was also taken into custody and is being held for extradition to Oldham County, Kentucky.

Friends of Azizi described him as a hardworking sole breadwinner who had come to the United States from Afghanistan just a few years ago in hopes of supporting his family back home. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover the costs of returning his body to Afghanistan.

Anthony’s family has also launched a separate GoFundMe to bring his body back to Chicago.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit was initiated during a traffic stop and that additional warrants and charges are pending.
