Renovations to Ocean Terminal at the Port of Savannah are now more than 60% complete, with the project on track to make Savannah one of the most capable container ports on the East Coast, the Georgia Ports Authority announced Tuesday at its board of directors meeting.
The $1.6 billion project is expanding Ocean Terminal’s annual container capacity from its current 200,000 TEU to 1.75 million twenty-foot equivalent units — a nearly ninefold increase designed to handle the growing volume of cargo moving through the Georgia coast.
“Ocean Terminal is a major part of our strategy to prepare Savannah for future growth. The renovated berth is fully completed and ready for big ships,” said Georgia Ports Authority CEO Griff Lynch at Tuesday’s board meeting, reported WSAV Savannah.
The full Ocean Terminal yard is targeted for completion by the end of 2028. In the interim, GPA will operate smaller vessels at the facility until the first phase of the container yard renovation is finished in mid-fall 2027.
A separate $29 million port-funded overpass is now open, routing trucks departing Ocean Terminal directly onto U.S. 17 and Interstate 16 and eliminating heavy port traffic from surrounding neighborhood streets. When the expanded gate facility is complete, it will feature 12 inbound lanes and six outbound lanes to reduce congestion and improve truck processing efficiency.
The Port of Savannah is currently the fourth-busiest container port in the United States and has been one of the fastest-growing on the East Coast. The Ocean Terminal expansion is a core component of the GPA’s long-term capacity strategy, built to accommodate continued growth in both domestic and international trade flowing through coastal Georgia.
