Speaker John burns has been spoken of frequently in the news since the second week of February when his so-called general counsel Keith Williams threw Senator Colton Moore to the ground while preventing him from entering the house chamber to attend a joint session of the Georgia General Assembly
Burns has been widely criticized for attempting to ban Moore from entering the chamber, a move that some experts say violates Georgia's Constitution, Georgia law, and rules of the General Assembly itself.
Burns has yet to drop a misdemeanor charge he had leveled against Sen. Moore and has not apologized for the actions taken against Moore. Some say Burns attempt to prevent a sitting Senator from attending a Joint Session is at best a large overstep and at worst may have violated the law. Is this why Burns seems to be executing damage control?
The only other mentions of Trump seem to have occurred following the November 5th elections.
Sources indicate Burns did not attend the several Trump rallies held in Georgia in the final months prior to the campaign.
Yet surprisingly, in the past three weeks John burns has found reasons to go to Washington DC twice. He posted a picture with several other George representatives stating he was there to support the signing of the Laken Riley bill.
.
Notably Burns made no comment about the fact that on February 4th, 2024, Sen. Colton Moore produced video showing illegal immigrants being trafficked through Hartsfield airport, yet neither Burns nor the Georgia House took action to follow up or investigate the findings.
Last week Burns went again to Washington DC to reportedly attend the signing of the “No Men In Women's Sports” executive order by Trump.
This seems somewhat remarkable as Jon Burns' stance on transgender individuals is unclear to many. As an example, during a recent transgender event at the Capitol,, Burns did nothing to prevent transgender men from using the restroom marked "Women" outside the house chamber. Something many women found inappropriate and objectionable given the setting in the Capitol building.
Last week Burns quickly rolled out a new proposed bill the “Riley Gaines Act” seemingly to garner some public approval for himself given Trump’s executive order.
Many also remember that in March of last year, John Burns invited a transgender pastor, Rev. Andi Woodworth, (a person born male) to provide the morning invocation to the house chamber. This was the first time that a transgender individual had been invited to provide an invocation in the Georgia House.
In a video produced for Brian Kemp regarding his "tort reform” initiative (begun shortly after returning from Kemp's trip tp the World Economic Forum Davos meeting), Burns can be seen sitting behind the governor and reacting with a knowing smirk and head shake when Kemp alludes to a possible special session to ensure that tort reform gets rammed through this year.
Readers will recall that Kemp has in the past refused to consider special sessions regarding the 2020 elections and subsequently a call for investigation into the actions of Fani Willis, Many wonder why tort reform, which would largely protect insurance company interests, would be considered a priority for a special session.
Some say Burns reaction makes him look like anything but a statesman. See below.
What will we see next from Mr. Burns we don't know but we and many around Georgia are keeping eyes wide open.
